Inspired
by this command of the Lord ,St.Thomas ,one of the twelve disciples of
Jesus Christ ,came to Kerala in AD 52.One of the four priestly Brahmin
families who accepted the new faith was Pakalomattom . These families
and their children down the line were subjected to much hardship by the
Brahmin community ,and consequently they had towards South by the end
of the 2nd century.
|
|
|
Thus they came via Angamali , to Kuravilangad , near Ettumanoor in Kottayam
district. Here they prospered and in course of time , spread to all parts
of Southern Kerala. The High priest Eravi Kartan , was the first person
who accepted the new faith in Pakalomattom family. Alapatt house in Kuravilangad
is very prominent among the Pakalomattom descendants .....
A handsome youth & silk cloth merchant from Pakalomattom Alapatt house , named Idicula reached the Royal Palace of Venad in 1680 A.D. Queen Maharani Umayamma honoured him with the title" Tharakan " , meaning noble merchant .As per the ancient customs ,an honoured person was a preferred guest of the Royal family .So Idiculla Tharakan lived in the palace during Umayamma 's rule till 1684 A.D. He then moved to a house in Malakkara called Ayrookuzhiyil . Afterwards he moved to Arattupuzha .The property in which he lived there is still known as Tharakan veedu .Later he shifted to Puthencavu and settled on the pampa river bank .Here he used the Malakkara house name ' Ayrookuzhiyil '.Thus he became the Doyen of the great Ayrookuzhiyil Family which has now spread all over the world. I belong to the ninth generation of this family .
Idicula Tharakan (Senior) Ayrookuzhiyil Puthencavu had six sons .Idicula
Tharakan ( junior ), Arattupuzha was the eldest of them. He moved to nearby
village in the East , Arattupuzha and settled there. He had six sons.
Idiculla Tharakanveetil was the youngest of them and he lived in the family
house of Tharakan veedu at Arattupuzha . |

One of the 4 Brahmin families who had accepted Christian faith from St.
Thomas Apostle was Sankarapuri . Mahadevarpattanam was a town east of
Kodungallore where St. Thomas landed in India . Mahadevarpattanam was
divided into 4 regions , of which Manigramam was inhabited by Sankarapuri
family. The first person of Sankarapuri family who received baptism from
the saint was renamed Thomman . In AD 835 , when the town was attacked
, Sankarapuri family with other christian families migrated to Angamally.
Opposition of Samoodiri in 13 th Century made them to settle in Kuravilangad
. Threat of Muslims compelled their then family patriarch Ettymatthen
Tharakan to seek the help of Nilackal King at Chayal. Impressed of his
abilities and talents by the King Maharajah , Etty Mathen Tharakan was
made Chief of his army .
It was Nilackal royal family , who later came to be known as Pandalam Kings. Owing to attack of the robber gangster Vakrapuli and some deadly epidermics , the King and his men migrated to Pandalam . The King built a palace , south of Achankovil river. The King gave the land , from the palace to the east until Thazhoorkadavu , under the control of Etty Mathen Tharakan . Perhaps due to the presence of a small church at Thumpamun , Etty Mathen Tharakan and family moved to Thumpamun , 4 km east of Pandalam . There were only a few nasrani families in Thumpamun at that time. The property of Kaithavana Kudumbum can still be seen at Thumpamun, 1 km inside the public road north of Thumpamun Valiyapally .Once when there was a dispute regarding the construction of church , the King himself came to oversee the construction . Kaithavana family flourished and prospered over the centuries ,in Thumpamun and Kaippattoor near Pathanamthitta , Kerala . Kannampara is one of the branches of this great family of Kaithavana of which my grandmother is a member. |

M P Philipose
is the son of M P Philip ,who was a Forest Ranger in Tamil Nadu.He belonged to Manapurathu family of East Kallada . M P Philip married
Annamma ( Koprapurackel , Kayamkulam ) . M P Philip settled in Madurai
long ago and hence whereabouts of relatives at Kallada are unknown. He
was one of 3 brothers and a sister. Manapurathu family members were prosperous
landlords of those days. It was said that the family possessed a big school
and family church in Kallada. M P Philip was sent to Calcutta for education
in those days. He himself had received 125 acres of land & paddy field
in Kallada as his share in the ancestral property. Luxurious lifestyle
, drinking and charity easily slipped the wealth from him. M P Philip,
after retirement as a Forest Ranger , worked as a wood consultant for
Madura Coats , Madurai. That was how my grandfather M P Philipose got
the work in Madura Coats and settled in Madurai , Tamil Nadu . Due to
early demise of M P Philip ,remaining property at Kallada was unmanageable
and hence given to the relatives or sold .
(Anyone who are of Manapurathu family of Kallada ,reading this , please contact me ...It would like to know more about my relatives in Kallada . ) |

The history
of Kurudamannil family is as follows .One nazrani family in Ayroor village
(near Kozhencherry , Pathanamthitta Dist. , Kerala ) was known as 'tharayilethu'
(thaayillum) family. This ancestral place is situated about one kilometre
west of Cherukolpuzha by the side of the main Thiruvella Cherkolpuzha
road. Today there is a marble tower erected by the ' thayillam kudumbayogam'
as a landmark cherishing the root family of so many well-known branches.
There are dark pages in the history of Kerala, however there are documentation
dating back to AD 974 ('mambilly sasanm' ) where Ayroor village is decreed
to establish a Hindu temple.

Five families are mentioned in the historical records, Tharayilleth is
one of the five ancient families in Ayroor. The sixth generation from
'thaayillam' was the 'thengumthottathil' family. The eldest of the two
sons of Thengumthottathil Soman Tharakan (1748-1830), called IRIPOOTTY
founded the glorious Kurudamannil dynasty. Iripootty married Elayacharamma,
from Mallapally Kaiyalathu family and settled in "Kurud-mon"(small farm)
around AD1800. The 'kurud mon' skirted by the 'kaduva thod' (tigers brook)
and Pamba River, set amidst scenic splendour about one km. east of Cherukolpuzha,
later became the famous Kurudamannil.
Kurdamannil Iripootty begot six sons- 1. Kaipallil Simon, 2. Kaiplackal
Potha, 3. Kurumpelil Irupootty, 4. Kanthapallil Chackko, 5. PuthenpurackelVarghese
6. Kurudamannil Ittyavra
